Water Tower Guest House Main House Duplex

From Owner's Handout:

Welcome to our house and garden. We will have lived here for 13 years this July. The home was originally built by Dr. Wm. Makaroff, as a lovely home for his wife and three daughters. The gardens were designed in 1943 by the late Leland H. Noel, Landscape Architect. The driveway is actually the shape of a heart and upon close examination the pathways can be seen to form the aorta; this was a gift from Dr. Makaroff's parents.

When you enter the driveway, there are rose bushes on the right and tree roses to the left. Also on the right hand side, there is a large space about 2-3 ft. deep; this was to be Dr. Makaroff's koi pond. There are pear, plum, walnut, mulberry and redbud trees planted around the perimeter. The path on the right leads into a Japanese garden, containing Japanese dogwood, cypress, weeping cedars, maples, azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, wild azaleas, hostas, lilies and various other wonderful plants.

From the top of the bridge, you can view the waterfall and large koi that live in the pond. On the other side of the bridge is a natural garden with a terraced wall running along the creek; follow the path and you will see old redwood stumps that are a famous part of Guerneville history. At the end of the path is a large pool with a hot tub. In this area is an outdoor kitchen, a walk-in refrigerator (for those who hung), majestic redwood trees, and an animal pen in back of the hedges.

There is a rose garden, and if you follow the paths, you will reach the goldfish pond and a beautiful shade garden. Turn to your left for a view of the family patio with its lovely magnolia trees, flagstone terrace, and many different plantings including hydrangea, lavenders, tulips, an orange tree, and mini rose bushes. If you pass by the mini-roses, you will see two other paths that circle around beautiful plantings such as rhododendrons, Rose of Sharon, and fuchsias.

Across the front of the house is a large lawn area, as well as camellia and huckleberry bushes, and crape myrtle. On the left side of the house is an aviary with Cockatiels and a Red-Rumped Parakeet.

In this garden, there are various flowering shrubs and a grapestake fence. On the other side of the fence is a parking area planted with hedges, fruit trees, butterfly trees, and St. John's Wort. The area also has storage for gardening supplies. If you look to the back of the property from this area, you will see a large quonset hut, a great workplace.

Go between the wonderful water tower and the guest house, and you'll see a hedge of lilacs, a lovely lawn area, and another area for a vegetable garden. Artichokes are already growing here.

To the rear is a duplex with a nice-sized living room, dinette, kitchen, pantry, two bedrooms and a bathroom with shower. The view of the surrounding hills with their redwood trees is wonderful. To the right of the duplex is an additional garden with lawn, roses, hydrangeas, azaleas and other plants.

The water tower was used for pumping water in the early 1900's. Now it is a lovely two-story home, containing an open living/kitchen area with an open staircase to the bedroom. A bath and dressing area are also found on the main floor. Next to the water tower is a studio with separate kitchen, a unit that also contains new carpet and tile [Cyndi's note: the carpet is not really new].

I forgot to tell you about the hot house and greenhouse; they are across from the vegetable garden, and they helped start many seeds and cuttings. I also forgot to tell you about our apple trees, one with four types of apples, and the large Southern Magnolias on the left side in front. This place is truly beautiful and we are most fortunate to have lived here, but feel it is time to move on.
